Pune: Bavdhan Citizens Launch Unique Initiative to Tackle Open Drinking and Littering

Responding proactively to the mounting concerns of open drinking and littering in Bavdhan, concerned citizens and the Bavdhan Citizens Forum have come together to initiate a novel campaign named “Bar Car-O-Bars.” This initiative is designed not only to raise awareness but also to send a strong message about the significance of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the community.

Sukumar Patankar, a resident of Bavdhan, expressed his enthusiasm for joining this initiative and underlined the growing issue of public littering and its detrimental effects on the locality. He stated, “Participating in this initiative is truly satisfying. The rise in open drinking and the subsequent littering have had adverse effects on Bavdhan. Through this campaign, our aim is to convey a crucial message to the people of Pune about the importance of upholding cleanliness and safety in our surroundings on a daily basis.”

On August 27, between 7 am and 8 am, citizens of Bavdhan united for a impactful undertaking. Over a thousand discarded alcohol bottles were collected from various locations, serving as a tangible representation of the prevailing problems. These bottles were then gathered and assembled at Van Udyan in Bavdhan, creating a visual reminder of the issues associated with open drinking, littering, and the resulting unsafe environment.

Core Member of the Bavdhan Citizens Forum, C S Krishnan, explained the rationale behind this endeavor. He stated, “BCF designated this Sunday for collecting alcohol bottles strewn along roadsides by individuals consuming outside their homes. The improper disposal of beer and liquor bottles along footpaths poses risks of injury to pedestrians due to broken glass. Glass doesn’t degrade naturally, emphasizing the urgency of timely collection. We extend our appreciation to the young participants from Bavdhan and other Bavdhan Citizens Forum members who organized and participated in this campaign.”

The issue of open drinking in Bavdhan, often referred to as “Car-O-Bars,” has gained prominence over the last three years. These incidents are commonly observed in dimly lit areas, secluded corners, hillside locations, and near liquor stores and public spaces lacking adequate security or surveillance. Some liquor outlets even provide snacks and disposable glasses, creating an environment conducive to public alcohol consumption.

These concerns extend beyond nighttime hours and persist during daylight, causing unease among the local community. Additionally, Bavdhan has witnessed an increase in prostitution, which has spread across various parts of the locality.

Around two years ago, the Bavdhan Citizens Forum identified areas in need of improved illumination through a comprehensive survey. Their efforts led to the installation of lights at various locations following a submission to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The forum also compiled a list of sites requiring police patrols, which was submitted to the local police station. However, the lack of response from authorities regarding these ongoing issues has led to frustration and a sense of powerlessness among citizens. Insufficient patrol personnel has been identified as a major contributor to the persistence of these challenges.

Through their “Chal Saaf Kar Bavdhan” (Let’s Clean Up Bavdhan) initiative, the BCF organized a unique protest on August 27, 2023, targeting the prevalent Car-O-Bars. Around 100 volunteers gathered at different locations to collect discarded liquor bottles strewn on roads. These bottles were then piled up outside Van Udyan (Forest Park) with a sign reading “Bavdhan’s Roadside Treasure.” The purpose of this demonstration is to highlight the issue and advocate for increased police presence within the local police station, promoting regular patrols and deterring potential wrongdoers.

Amid significant challenges, the resolute voice of concerned citizens remains unwavering in their endeavor to restore safety and harmony to Bavdhan’s streets. The call for action resonates throughout the community, urging swift attention from authorities and the implementation of sustainable measures for lasting transformation.
