Promoting Mental Well-being: Pune Embraces Chess as Therapeutic Tool

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about an increase in mental health issues, instability, and stress among individuals of all ages. Parents and teachers have noticed a rise in restlessness, lack of focus, and difficulty in concentration among children. To address these concerns and promote stability and attentiveness, the concept of “chess therapy” has emerged as a valuable tool, according to education expert Vivek Velankar.

The inauguration of the “chess therapy” concept by Velankar Chess Institute took place recently at Patrakar Sangh. The event was attended by Vivek Velankar, Makarand Velankar, chess coach and director of Velankar Chess Institute, Prakash Kunte, father of Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte, and Sonam Thakur, chess coach.

Makarand Velankar, while discussing the idea behind this activity, highlighted the positive effects of good mental health on various aspects of life. He emphasized that chess therapy can enhance confidence, foster a positive attitude, and address common issues such as restlessness, impulsivity, hyperactivity, lack of focus, nervousness, negative thinking, and depression among children. With increased screen time and a lack of determination, parents are concerned about their children’s learning abilities. Chess therapy offers a potential solution to these challenges.

Furthermore, Makarand Velankar emphasized that chess therapy can also benefit individuals facing high work pressure, as it helps alleviate forgetful behavior. Seniors can also derive great value from chess therapy.

Sonam Thakur provided additional details about the therapy, clarifying that its purpose is not solely to create skilled chess players, but to focus on the overall personality development of students. The therapy is designed as a three-month course with a suitable plan for each student. If necessary, the duration of the therapy can be extended.

Thakur further expressed the aim of making every individual chess literate and using the game to guide students in addressing their weaknesses.

Makarand Velankar, the proponent of chess therapy, has been involved in chess coaching, coordination, and broadcasting for the past three decades. His experience, combined with his M. Phil research on the positive impact of chess on children, families, and society, has led him to develop this unique model of chess therapy. Sonam Thakur, his colleague, is a chess coach, state arbiter, and an official coach for MCA’s “chess in school” initiative.

The introduction of chess therapy in Pune offers a promising approach to address mental health challenges, enhance personality development, and promote the well-being of individuals of all ages through the engaging game of chess.
