Postponement of Co-operative Society Elections in Maharashtra Amidst Lok Sabha 2024

In light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, the Maharashtra State Government has decided to postpone the election process of co-operative societies until May 31, 2024. This move aims to facilitate a seamless and transparent election process while ensuring the availability of officers and employees for pre-election work related to the Lok Sabha polls.

According to information derived from the state government order, accessed by Pune Pulse, the ongoing election procedures of co-operative societies face disruptions due to the engagement of cooperative department officers and employees in Lok Sabha pre-election activities. The state has witnessed the completion of elections for 50,238 out of 93,342 eligible co-operative societies, while the process for 10,783 societies is still underway. Additionally, 20,130 co-operative societies are awaiting election, and 7,827 are eligible for the year 2024.

The decision to postpone the elections is rooted in the need to address the vacancies in officer and employee positions at the taluka, district, and regional levels within the cooperative department. The government aims to create an environment conducive to smooth, transparent, and fear-free elections for all co-operative societies in the state.

As per the government order, elections are exempted only for those co-operative societies where the nomination stage has commenced or if the Supreme/High Court has mandated elections. All other co-operative societies in the state will undergo postponement until May 31, 2024, based on their current stage as of the date of this order.

The government order (reference number: 202402291213200202) is available on the official website www.maharashtra.gov.in of the Government of Maharashtra.
