Maharashtra to Implement Intelligent Traffic Management Systems on Key Highways to Tackle Rising Fatalities

In a proactive move to address the escalating number of accidents and fatalities on highways connecting Pune to neighboring districts, the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department has announced the implementation of an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on three crucial stretches spanning over 775 kilometers.

The decision to deploy ITMS on the four-lane highway between Pune and Solapur, the four-lane highway between Pune and Aurangabad, and the four to six-lane traffic between Pune and Nashik comes in response to a growing concern over the persistently high rate of accidents in these areas. While traffic accidents have seen a reduction in Maharashtra, daily fatalities have continued to rise, prompting the need for enhanced safety measures on these critical roadways.

With a total budget of approximately 285.89 crore, the project aims to not only curb accidents but also streamline incident management. The targeted stretches have been identified as accident-prone zones, making them a priority for intervention.

Mr. Kalaskar, an official from the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Department, highlighted the key features of the ITMS implementation, stating, “There will be a quick incident management system, ensuring prompt reporting of incidents to relevant authorities. Recognizing the importance of transporting victims to trauma centers within the Golden Hour, this system will work in coordination with the State Motor Vehicle Department, Highway Safety Police, emergency personnel, and trauma care centers through an integrated command and control center.”

This initiative is expected to significantly reduce fatalities by expediting incident response, creating a safer commuting experience on these vital Pune highways.
