PMPML’s Ambitious Move: 90 Bus Shelters to Serve Pune Commuters in 3 Months

Pune, August 22nd, 2023: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has taken a significant step forward in enhancing commuter convenience by issuing a work order for the installation of 300 bus shelters across various locations within the city. These stainless steel bus shelters are slated to be erected by August of the following year. In a promising development, approximately 90 of these shelters are projected to be operational within the next three months, with expectations to serve the public by the end of November.

This initiative marks a noteworthy progression, as PMPML had previously floated tenders for new bus shelters three years ago, but encountered challenges in garnering interest from potential contractors. However, under the guidance of the recently appointed Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), adjustments were made to the tendering process, leading to a renewed tender and ultimately securing an agency for the installation of 300 bus shelters throughout the city.

The Pune transport body currently administers around 5,000 bus stops across Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and the PMRDA region. Of these, approximately 1,130 bus shelters have been installed, including those situated within the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes.

The introduction of additional bus shelters is poised to address the growing demand for comfortable and convenient waiting areas for commuters. The forthcoming installation of these shelters is expected to significantly improve the overall commuting experience for the residents of Pune, offering a welcome respite from weather elements and enhancing the accessibility of public transportation options.

As the project progresses and the initial batch of bus shelters becomes operational, it will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing efforts to transform Pune’s public transportation landscape and foster a more commuter-friendly environment for the city’s residents.
