PMPML’s Ambitious Expansion Plan Stalled by PMRDA Red Tape

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is facing a significant roadblock in its expansion plan for the Pimpri Chinchwad area, with the allocation of land for three new depots pending approval from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). Despite a surge in the number of passengers, the transport company’s efforts to enhance infrastructure are hindered by bureaucratic delays.

Land Allocation Woes:

PMPML currently operates with three depots in Nigdi, Nehrunagar, and Bhosari in the twin towns of Pimpri Chinchwad. However, the proposed expansion includes setting up three new depots, and the reserved land falls under the jurisdiction of PMRDA. A PMPML official, speaking anonymously, revealed the challenges faced by the transport company in providing efficient services due to inadequate infrastructure.

Long-Pending Request:

Efforts to secure the allocated land have been ongoing for two years, with a recent plea sent to PMRDA requesting prompt action. However, the authority has cited difficulties in handing over the land, casting doubt on the prospects of establishing the new depots. PMRDA is contemplating restarting the process of land allocation.

Residents Express Discontent:

Residents of Pimpri Chinchwad have long criticized the PMPML administration for neglecting their demands. Complaints include extended waiting times for buses, poorly maintained bus stops, and a fleet of buses in disrepair, resulting in a diminished response from citizens. Locals have urged the expansion of bus services to newly-included villages and suburbs.

Financial Hurdles and Premium Demands:

When PMPML requested the plots from PMRDA, the transport utility was asked to pay a premium. PMRDA insisted on either a lump-sum payment for the plot’s value or an acquisition based on an agreement. While the former PMPML chief agreed to the terms, the proposal encountered obstacles due to budgetary and financial constraints.

Official’s Response:

Nitin Narvekar, Joint MD of PMPML, acknowledged the challenges, stating, “I will seek information about the status of bus depots in Pimpri Chinchwad from the concerned department and will inform you.”
