PMPML Plans New Bus Depot at Aundh Octroi Land in Pune

In a significant development for Pune’s public transport, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has finalized plans to repurpose land formerly used by the Aundh octroi post into a new bus depot and parking area. This decision follows a recent joint meeting involving PMPML officials, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and local MLA Siddharth Shirole, where strategies were outlined to optimize the use of this strategic location.

Background and Strategic Location

The plot, situated near the Rajiv Gandhi bridge linking PMC and PCMC areas, has long been underutilized. Currently, it accommodates some defunct buses previously rented by PMPML from private contractors. Discussions over the years have aimed at leveraging this space for PMPML’s operational needs, culminating in the recent decision.

Utilization Plan and Clearing Operations

According to Shirole, approximately 70 out-of-service buses are currently occupying parts of the plot. PMPML has been instructed to collaborate with bus contractors to swiftly vacate these buses, facilitating the site’s transformation into a functional depot and parking facility. This move is expected to alleviate issues associated with roadside parking of buses, a common concern among civic activists and regular commuters.

Community Impact and Stakeholder Engagement

Local activists, including Vikram Gaikwad from Narhe, have welcomed the decision, emphasizing the potential reduction in congestion caused by buses parked outside PMC buildings and existing PMPML depots. They have urged authorities to develop comprehensive policies ensuring maximum utilization of designated bus depots for efficient urban transport management.

Future Prospects and Policy Formulation

Looking ahead, PMPML plans to draft detailed plans for the layout and construction of the new depot. This initiative aligns with broader goals of enhancing public transport infrastructure and reducing environmental impact associated with urban congestion.
