PMPML Bus Driver Caught Endangering Lives: Phone Use While Driving Sparks Concern

In a concerning turn of events, reports have surfaced about Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus drivers jeopardizing the safety of passengers by using their phones while operating vehicles. A viral video captured the moment when a PMPML bus driver was seen holding a phone with one hand, prompting widespread attention and concerns for the safety of passengers and pedestrians.

The incident involved bus No. 133’s journey from Anand Park to Ma na pa at 9:30 am on February 16. A vigilant passenger tweeted about the driver’s phone use during the journey, leading to the identification of the bus with registration number MH 14 CW 2155, which was subsequently fined Rs 1,000.

This incident is not isolated, as several similar cases involving PMPML drivers have recently come to light. The continued negligence of some drivers poses a significant threat to the lives of passengers, despite actions taken against others. Calls for stricter measures to address this issue are growing louder.

Despite ongoing warnings, drivers persist in using phones while operating vehicles. Advocates for road safety emphasize the need for stringent regulations, akin to existing rules against tobacco consumption during work hours. Regular inspections of drivers and conductors could potentially mitigate accident rates, but the introduction of specific rules regarding mobile phone usage is now imperative.

Statistics reveal a worrying trend of a significant rise in the number of accidents involving PMPML buses. Between April and September 2022, 59 accidents resulted in eight fatalities. However, in 2023, this number doubled to 75 accidents, causing the loss of 19 lives. Driver negligence is identified as a primary factor in these accidents, prompting the introduction of breathalyzer tests to ensure drivers remain sober while on duty.
