PMC Proposes Eco-Friendly Measures for Eateries to Combat Air Pollution in Pune

Mandate for Cleaner Fuels Aimed at Tackling Rising Pollution Levels

Pune News : In response to growing concerns regarding air quality, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking proactive steps to address air pollution issues by proposing directives that would require eateries to transition to eco-friendly fuel options. This move comes in the wake of a plea from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) urging the PMC to implement measures aimed at reducing particulate matter (PM) and odors emitted by food establishments across the city.

The proliferation of hotels, restaurants, and eateries in Pune has contributed to elevated levels of air pollution, largely due to non-compliance with environmental standards. In an effort to combat this pressing issue, the PMC’s Health Department is preparing to issue guidelines mandating all food business operators (FBOs) to replace traditional fuels with cleaner alternatives, as confirmed by municipal officials.

Dr. Bhagwan Pawar, PMC’s Health Officer, affirmed that discussions were initiated in response to the MPCB’s directives, culminating in the decision to circulate guidelines requiring eateries and FBOs to use cleaner fuels. These measures are aimed at not only improving air quality but also ensuring strict adherence to pollution control norms.

The MPCB has specifically recommended the adoption of Liquified Natural Gas (LPG) and electric ovens, while advocating for the transition from coal-based tandoors to electric ones.

Additionally, the MPCB has proposed the implementation of schemes offering subsidized LPG connections and financial assistance to facilitate the adoption of cleaner fuels. Funding for these initiatives could potentially be sourced from programs such as the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) and the fifteenth Finance Commission (XV-FC).

The PMC’s initiative reflects a concerted effort to tackle air pollution at its source by promoting sustainable practices within the food industry. However, practical challenges and financial considerations may necessitate further dialogue and support mechanisms for affected businesses.
