Ola and Uber Drivers Call Off Strike in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Amidst Regulatory Developments

The indefinite strike called by app-based cab drivers in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, initially slated to commence on February 20, has been called off following recent regulatory developments. A press release from the Baghtoy Rickshawala Auto Union announced the postponement, citing instructions from the State Transport Commissioner to fully implement the Centre’s Cab Aggregator Rules.

Regulatory Intervention and Show Cause Notices

The State Transport Commissioner’s directive prompted the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) to issue show cause notices to both Ola and Uber, taking into account drivers’ concerns. The regulatory intervention aims to ensure the comprehensive implementation of rules governing app-based cab services. Additionally, a crucial meeting under the chairmanship of the Collector is scheduled for February 21, emphasizing a collaborative approach to address the issues at hand.

Background of Fare Regulations and Unmet Adjustments

Earlier, on January 3, the Pune Regional Transport Authority (RTA) had established new fare regulations under the authority of then-Collector Rajesh Deshmukh. These regulations set a base fare of ₹37 for the first 1.5 km, followed by ₹25 per subsequent km in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Baramati. Despite the regulatory framework, Keshav Kshirsagar, President of the Indian Gig Workers Front and Baghtoy Rickshawala Auto Union, highlighted the companies’ delay in adjusting cab fares. As a result, a planned demonstration in front of the Pune RTO on February 20, along with a service suspension until new fares are implemented, was averted with the recent developments.
