Navigating Regulatory Waters: Pune Hospitality Sector and Police Collaborate for Clarity

Amitesh Kumar

In a significant development, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar engaged in a crucial meeting with representatives from various hotel associations, including the United Hospitality Association (UHA) and the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI). The meeting aimed to discuss and address concerns raised by the hospitality sector regarding recent directives impacting bars, restaurants, pubs, and rooftop establishments in the city.

During the meeting, hoteliers expressed grievances about operational hindrances caused by the directives issued on February 19th under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). Notable issues included police interventions at 10 pm, stringent CCTV coverage requirements, and a ban on hookahs.

Assurances were provided, with Commissioner Amitesh Kumar allowing establishments to conclude operations and close by 2 am. Police presence for routine checks will be delayed until 1:45 am unless prompted by a complaint. Concerns about drug-related activities led to a plea for cooperation from hotel associations in reporting any instances promptly.

The Police Commissioner acknowledged challenges faced by the hospitality sector, promising a thorough review and revision of the existing order after March 4th. The fate of herbal hookahs will be reconsidered in the revised guidelines, taking into account stakeholders’ concerns.

The United Hospitality Association (UHA) proposed a collaborative initiative with the police to promote responsible drinking habits, discouraging driving under the influence. UHA also announced a campaign against drunk driving across partner restaurants, supporting the Commissioner’s efforts to combat substance abuse.

The meeting underscored a collaborative effort to navigate regulatory challenges and foster a conducive environment for Pune City’s hospitality sector, emphasizing cooperation between industry stakeholders and law enforcement.
