Monsoon Resurgence: Pune Gears Up for Heavier Rainfall From September 22

Residents of Pune and its neighboring regions can anticipate a surge in rainfall starting September 22, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), as Maharashtra gears up for another bout of active monsoon conditions beginning September 21. This development comes as a low-pressure area takes shape over the West Bay of Bengal, propelling favorable weather patterns in Vidarbha and northern Maharashtra, as well as light to isolated moderate showers in other areas of the state.

IMD officials have disclosed that Pune city and its adjacent areas are set to experience heightened precipitation from September 22 onwards. Additionally, there exists a possibility of isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder activity within the district.

After a month-long hiatus in monsoon activity, Maharashtra has witnessed phased resurgences in rainfall during September, predominantly attributed to weather systems originating in the Bay of Bengal. This month marks the third occurrence of a low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal, with the present system, akin to its predecessors, anticipated to progress northwestward in the approaching days. Consequently, the state will undergo a partial monsoon revival commencing September 21.

Anupam Kashyapi, the head of the weather and forecasting division at IMD Pune, elaborated, “The low-pressure area that has formed in the West Bay of Bengal is expected to move west-northward. Consequently, monsoon activity in Maharashtra is poised to partially rekindle starting the evening of September 21. Pune may witness increased rainfall from September 22, accompanied by the potential for isolated thunderstorms and heavy precipitation.”

However, it’s important to note that the system’s strength may be somewhat limited, given its partial approach to Maharashtra. Vidarbha is projected to receive relatively widespread rain, with certain districts in northern Maharashtra likely experiencing substantial rainfall. Nonetheless, the situation for other regions remains subject to clarification, Kashyapi added.

IMD has issued color-coded rainfall warnings valid until September 23, with significant alerts directed at Vidarbha and select districts in the central part of the state.
