Pune, August 22, 2023: Jyoti Jagtap, an activist associated with Pune’s Kabir Kala Manch, who was arrested in connection with the Elgaar Parishad case over alleged links with Maoists, has approached the Supreme Court for bail. The move comes after the Bombay High Court rejected her bail application in the case. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear her bail plea on September 21.
Jyoti Jagtap’s bail application was turned down by the Bombay High Court, which stated that the evidence against her was substantial, and she was believed to be part of a larger conspiracy orchestrated by the banned organization Communist Party of India (Maoist). She had been arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) about three years ago.
It’s noteworthy that the Supreme Court had previously granted bail to two other accused individuals, Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira, in the same Elgaar Parishad case. The court’s decision to grant them bail was based on a specific formula, and this formula’s applicability to Jyoti Jagtap’s case will also be examined during the upcoming hearing.
The Elgaar Parishad case has garnered significant attention and legal scrutiny, and the Supreme Court’s upcoming hearing on Jyoti Jagtap’s bail plea will be closely watched by legal experts, activists, and the general public alike. The case has raised important questions about the rights of activists and the balance between national security concerns and individual liberties.
