Justice Served: Pune Court Sentences Two Assailants to Seven Years in Jail for the Murder of a Man Protecting a Woman from Harassment

Pune, 25th June 2023: The verdict in the Chandan Prakash assault case was delivered by Sessions Judge P. P. Jadhav, sentencing the two perpetrators to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs three lakhs on each of them. The convicted individuals have been identified as Tipu Sultan Mansuri (24 years old, resident of Ghorpadi) and Anirudh Rathod (25 years old, resident of Vadgaon Sheri).

The incident took place on February 24, 2019, at Hotel Empire in Kharadi when Chandan Prakash Jaiprakash Singh (36 years old, resident of Vishrantwadi) was subjected to a brutal assault by Mansuri and Rathod. Chandan had gone to the hotel for dinner with a female friend, while the assailants were also present at the establishment. The actions of the accused startled Chandan’s girlfriend, leading to a confrontation between Chandan and the attackers within the premises of the hotel.

After leaving the hotel around 1:30 am, Mansuri and Rathod physically attacked Chandan, using their hands, kicks, and even stones. The entire incident was captured on the hotel’s CCTV cameras. Feeling unwell, Chandan returned home but was later admitted to the hospital.

Tragically, Chandan succumbed to his injuries. Following the incident, Chandan’s brother, Rahul Jaiprakash Singh, filed a complaint at Chandannagar police station, bringing the matter to the attention of the authorities.

Both accused individuals were charged under relevant sections of the law, and Public Prosecutor Chandrakiran Salvi presented the case before the court. The prosecution relied on the testimonies of 12 witnesses and the CCTV footage as crucial evidence to establish the guilt of the accused.

Taking into account the compelling evidence presented, including the CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, the court found both accused guilty and sentenced them to seven years of rigorous imprisonment. Additionally, a fine of Rs three lakhs was imposed on each convict. The court also directed that out of the fine amount, Rs five lakhs should be provided to Chandan’s wife.
