Investigation into Sassoon Hospital Rat Bite Incident Underway, DMER Vows Stern Action

Committee Report Prompts Response from Medical Authorities Amidst Allegations of Negligence

The alleged rat bite-induced death of a patient at Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) has sparked outrage and demands for accountability from the medical community. Sagar Renuse, a 30-year-old patient admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), passed away on April 1 under troubling circumstances, leading to an investigation by a committee appointed by the director of medical education and research (DMER).

Renuse’s tragic demise, coupled with claims from his relatives of visible rat bites on his body, has raised serious questions about patient safety and hospital management protocols. The incident has drawn swift condemnation from medical authorities, with DMER emphasizing the gravity of the situation and promising decisive action against those responsible.

According to Renuse’s family, the patient had been under treatment at the ICU when they noticed rat bites on his body, indicating a potential lapse in hygiene and safety standards at the hospital. In response to these allegations, a thorough investigation was launched, culminating in a report submitted to DMER on Thursday.

Dr. Deelip Mhaisekar, DMER, underscored the unacceptable nature of such incidents, stressing that immediate action would be taken based on the committee’s findings. While acknowledging the complexity of Renuse’s medical condition, Mhaisekar reiterated the need for accountability and prevention of similar occurrences in the future.

Renuse’s relatives have demanded accountability from the hospital administration, urging for the initiation of legal proceedings against those deemed responsible for the lapse in care. The submission of a formal complaint to Dr. Vinayak Kale, dean of BJMC, reflects the family’s pursuit of justice in the wake of their tragic loss.

Dr. Ajay Tawre, medical superintendent of SGH, affirmed the hospital’s commitment to addressing the issue, citing regular pest control measures and ongoing efforts to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff alike.

As the investigation unfolds, the spotlight remains on the need for stringent protocols and accountability measures within healthcare facilities to prevent such incidents and uphold patient safety.
