In a curious shift in transportation trends, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune has reported a significant rise of 21% in the issuance of International Driving Permits (IDPs) for the year 2023, marking a contrast to the declining numbers in local driving license applications. The data, released on Tuesday, sheds light on the changing preferences of individuals in Pune when it comes to obtaining driving permits.
According to official figures, Pune issued 4,914 IDPs in 2023 (until December 25), showcasing a notable increase from the 4,090 IDPs issued in the previous year. On the flip side, the issuance of local driving licenses witnessed a dip, with 1,29,693 permanent licenses issued in 2023 compared to 1,46,081 in 2022.
Sanjiv Bhor, Pune’s regional transport officer, attributes the surge in IDP registrations to the growing desire among Pune residents to drive themselves while traveling abroad. He emphasized the cost savings associated with using a personal vehicle and the increasing trend of exploring lesser-known destinations. Bhor highlighted that many students embarking on international studies have also contributed to the overall rise in international travel.
An IDP, valid for one year and non-renewable, allows individuals to drive abroad and is not applicable within the local jurisdiction of the RTO. To obtain an IDP, applicants must hold a valid driving license, an Indian passport, and a valid visa for the intended country of travel.
Bhor anticipates a 5% decrease in the issuance of permanent driving licenses in 2023 compared to the previous year. While the exact reason for the decline remains unclear, he acknowledged that there are still a few days left in the year, and the numbers may undergo some changes.
Another official suggested that the stricter testing process for local driving license issuance could be a contributing factor to the decline. Stringent measures, particularly during the final test, necessitate flawless performance from applicants to secure their licenses.
