International Cargo Services Set to Resume at Pune Airport After Year-Long Hiatus

Pune: After a hiatus of one year, international cargo services at Pune airport are poised to resume operations, with the Customs Department issuing clearance for the much-awaited service. The airport administration has received orders to restart international cargo operations, and preparations have been finalized in the cargo terminal, with services scheduled to commence on the upcoming Monday.

The international cargo services at Pune airport were halted for a year due to non-clearance by the Customs Department. The facility underwent inspection in December, and following the resolution of minor technical issues, the cargo service received approval in the first week of the new year.

With the resumption of international cargo services, both small and large entrepreneurs in Pune, along with citizens, are expected to benefit. Currently, Pune has international connections to Singapore and Dubai, allowing goods to be shipped directly to these destinations. Travelers looking to send baggage to other countries, such as Europe and the United States, can also utilize the international cargo services from Pune airport.

The introduction of the ‘transit’ facility is another noteworthy feature at Pune Airport. With this, cargo permitted by the Customs Department at Pune Airport won’t require additional permission at other airports during transit.

A senior airport official, speaking on condition of anonymity, highlighted the impact of the year-long suspension on local producers, farmers, and traders. The resumption of international cargo services is anticipated to bring relief and opportunities for these stakeholders, especially farmers who export agricultural goods like vegetables and fruits from the region.

Pradeep Kumar, Deputy General Manager, Cargo, Pune Airport, expressed optimism, stating, “The Customs Department has authorized the commencement of international cargo services. The path for this service is now clear, and we’re hoping to restart the service on Monday.”
