IMD Issues Orange Alert for Pune: Heavy Rainfall Expected from Sunday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts signaling a significant rise in rainfall intensity in Pune and surrounding regions starting from Sunday. This comes amidst a cyclonic circulation over the northeast Arabian Sea and a prominent shear zone along 20°N, which are contributing factors to the heightened weather activity.

Alerts and Forecasts

IMD has categorized Pune under an “orange” alert for Sunday and Monday, with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted in isolated areas of the ghat regions. Additionally, “yellow” and “orange” alerts have been issued for several districts including Kolhapur, Satara, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Thane, and Palghar until July 3rd.

Current Precipitation Data

Recent reports as of 5:30 PM on Saturday indicate varying levels of rainfall across Maharashtra:

  • Lavasa recorded 9 mm
  • Malin received 6 mm
  • Chinchwad experienced 4.5 mm
  • Mahabaleshwar saw 23 mm
  • Santacruz registered 19 mm In contrast, Pune city observed minimal precipitation, with Shivajinagar recording a mere 0.1 mm.

Impact and Precautions

With the forecast predicting light to moderate rainfall for Pune city in the upcoming days, residents are advised to stay informed about potential impacts such as localized flooding, reduced visibility, traffic disruptions, and possible damage to vulnerable structures. Authorities are particularly alert for landslides, mudslides, and riverine flooding in susceptible catchment areas.

Agricultural and Community Preparedness

Farmers have been cautioned about potential crop damage due to inundation, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in agricultural communities. Residents in low-lying areas and ghat regions are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of increased rainfall activity.

As independent weather experts suggest that this wet spell could persist until July 10th, continued monitoring of weather updates and adherence to safety guidelines are crucial for all residents and stakeholders in affected regions.
