Heavy Rain Disrupts Pune Airport: Flight Delays and Traffic Woes

Heavy rain since Sunday has wreaked havoc on travel plans for passengers flying to and from Pune Airport. The adverse weather conditions have not only delayed several flights but also created significant challenges for passengers attempting to reach the airport amidst widespread waterlogging and heavy traffic congestion throughout the city.

Flight Delays and Passenger Appeals

Airlines have issued appeals to passengers, urging them to arrive at the airport two to three hours before their scheduled departure times due to the ongoing heavy rain alert for the next few days. The persistent rainfall has caused operational delays, with many flights being delayed or rerouted.

A passenger who flew from Delhi to Pune shared his harrowing experience, expressing relief when his flight finally landed safely amidst the intense rainfall. Another passenger expressed frustration over delays in receiving parking clearance upon landing, highlighting inefficiencies at Pune Airport.

Response from Airport Authorities

In response to these complaints, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) acknowledged that adverse weather conditions were causing delays and diversions at Pune Airport. The improved weather conditions led to a rush of arrivals, resulting in apron congestion and parking delays. The AAI apologized for any inconvenience caused to passengers.

Traffic Congestion on Airport Road

Commuters traveling to Pune Airport on Sunday to pick up or drop off friends and relatives faced significant challenges due to heavy traffic congestion on Airport Road. Amit Paranjape, a citizen, described the situation as “crazy,” reporting over two hours of travel time from Deccan Gymkhana to Pune Airport, with similar delays on the return journey. Major waterlogging, especially near Lohegaon Airport and Viman Nagar areas, exacerbated the traffic situation.

Advisory from Airlines

Given the heavy rain alert for the next couple of days, several airlines, including Vistara Airlines, have advised customers to allow extra time for their journey to Pune Airport to avoid potential flight delays or missed flights. The combination of heavy rain and slow vehicle movement en route to the airport underscores the importance of planning ahead and ensuring sufficient travel time during inclement weather conditions.
