From Sky to Ground: Pune’s Skywalk Demolition Raises Concerns

The recent dismantling of the skywalk at Mukundrao Ambedkar Chowk in Vishrantwadi has stirred controversy and drawn scrutiny towards the project planning and execution of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Constructed at a considerable cost of Rs 5 crore, the removal of the skywalk to accommodate a new flyover and grade separator has sparked accusations of mismanagement and wastage of taxpayers’ money.

Critics, including civic activist Shashikant Satote, have voiced concerns over what they perceive as poor planning and administration by the PMC. They argue that the skywalk, previously erected without public consultation, became a symbol of inefficiency due to its perpetually malfunctioning elevator and inadequate utility for pedestrians navigating the bustling intersection.

The decision to dismantle the skywalk comes as MLA Sunil Tingre leads efforts to construct a grade separator on Alandi Road and a flyover from Alandi Road to Airport Road. The presence of the skywalk posed a hindrance to these development plans, leading to its removal. While a portion of the dismantled structure will find a new home at the Pratik Nagar corner on Alandi Road, concerns linger among senior citizens about its usability and the fate of the remaining parts.

This incident is not isolated, as similar examples of poorly executed infrastructure projects abound in Pune. In Indira Nagar, for instance, a subway and pedestrian bridge lie idle despite substantial investments. Residents have resorted to risky road crossings due to the impracticality of the infrastructure designed to enhance pedestrian safety. Similarly, at Viman Nagar Chowk, a pedestrian walkway with numerous steps presents accessibility challenges, raising questions about the PMC’s planning priorities and the effective utilization of funds.

The dismantling of the Vishrantwadi skywalk underscores the importance of public consultation and meticulous project management in urban development initiatives. It serves as a reminder of the need for transparency, accountability, and efficiency in utilizing taxpayer funds for infrastructure projects. As Pune continues to evolve, it is imperative that civic authorities prioritize the safety and well-being of residents while striving for progress and development.
