Forest Department Nears Legal Action in Animal Mismanagement Case

In a significant development, the forest department is set to file a chargesheet in the animal mismanagement case registered against the director of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park. The case, filed under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, stems from irregularities uncovered in the Wildlife Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WARRC) of the zoological park.

Investigation Progress

The forest department initiated an investigation in September 2023 following complaints from Aditya Paranjape, honorary wildlife warden of the Pune Forest Division. The WARRC’s functioning, outsourced to the Indian Herpetological Society (IHS), faced scrutiny during two inspections in May and June. Reports revealed missing records, illegal captivity, and improper release of animals into different habitats.

Charges and Acknowledgments

The zoo director faced charges related to wildlife protection violations, prompting the forest department to register an offense. Subsequently, the director admitted to some charges during an inquiry committee session. He implicated other individuals, including zoo staff and society members managing the center. The department summoned these individuals, and one responded in writing citing health issues.

Upcoming Legal Proceedings

Ashutosh Shendage, the assistant conservator of forests and investigative officer, confirmed the completion of the department’s inquiry. While there is no set deadline, preparations are underway to file the chargesheet promptly.

Reactions and Expectations

Aditya Paranjape expressed optimism about the impending legal action, calling it a crucial development. With the inquiry concluded, he hopes for swift and decisive action in the case.
