Exploring the Cosmos: Pune’s IUCAA Invites Public to Open Campus Day on National Science Day

Pune’s Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) is set to open its doors to the public on Wednesday, February 28, as part of the annual open campus day celebration in honor of National Science Day. The event, eagerly anticipated by children and city residents, provides a unique opportunity for visitors to delve into the captivating world of astronomy and astrophysics.

Aligned with the national science theme of “Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat,” IUCAA has crafted a tentative schedule for the day’s activities, accessible on the official website of the organization. This year’s theme reflects the commitment to showcasing the intersection of indigenous technologies with advancements in astronomy and astrophysics.

Prof R Srianand, the Director of IUCAA, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Along with IUCAA colleagues, I welcome you all to our National Science Day celebrations on the 28th of February. The annual open day is one of IUCAA’s most important events since it allows us to promote our varied activities to the public.” He emphasized the efforts being made this year to highlight IUCAA’s significant scientific achievements, present various observing facilities, and promote outreach programs.

IUCAA has played a pivotal role in advancing research in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) in India. The organization has invested in facilities such as the IUCAA Girawali observatory, Southern African Large Telescope (the world’s largest mirror dimension), AstroSat, Aditya-L1, and others. Future initiatives include LIGO-India, Vera Rubin Observatory, Thirty Meter Telescope, Square Kilometer Array, among others.

Visitors are encouraged to explore these endeavors through attractive models and posters crafted by students, providing a comprehensive understanding of the advancements and projects undertaken by IUCAA. The open campus day serves as a bridge between the scientific community and the public, fostering an appreciation for the wonders of the cosmos.
