Expansion and Enrichment: Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park Welcomes New Additions for Breeding and Research

The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, popularly known as Katraj Zoo, continues to captivate tourists and children as it welcomes three new wild animals with the primary aim of promoting breeding and pairing among its inhabitants. The recent additions include one male leopard, two males, and two females four-horned antelopes, and a male hyena.

Rajkumar Jadhav, the director of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, expressed the significance of pairing animals for their well-being within the zoo environment. He revealed ongoing plans for the expansion of the zoo, complete with a master plan in preparation. These new animal varieties not only enhance the visitor experience but also contribute to scientific studies and research initiatives. To accommodate the newcomers, a new exhibit has been constructed, reflecting the zoo’s commitment to upgrading facilities and employing new technologies for animal health care.

The male leopard is intended to be paired with the existing three female leopards, while the two males and two females four-horned antelopes will find companionship among the three existing male and one female antelope. The male hyena, the latest addition, is set to be paired with the two existing hyenas. This strategic approach aims to create conducive environments for breeding and interaction among the zoo’s diverse inhabitants.

Notably, on January 7th, 2024, the civic body introduced a leopard and two-striped hyenas to the zoo, further enriching its animal population.

Currently, the new animals are housed under shelter, with the leopard undergoing quarantine before its anticipated release into the zoo habitat. The ongoing efforts at Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park emphasize a commitment to providing the best possible care for its residents while fostering a conducive environment for research and wildlife conservation.
