Enhanced Accessibility at Pune Railway Station: New Bridge and Lifts

Pune Railway Station is gearing up for a significant transformation to elevate passenger convenience. The Railway Board has granted approval for the construction of a new 12-meter wide bridge, complete with ramps, and the installation of four lifts. However, this exciting development will necessitate the demolition of the existing 3.6-meter-wide pedestrian bridge, potentially causing temporary disruptions to railway traffic during the construction phase.

The Pune station has witnessed a steady rise in the number of passengers, including a significant portion of female travelers and senior citizens. Currently, the station provides three escalators, but these are not always sufficient to meet the needs of passengers with mobility challenges, particularly those in wheelchairs. To address this concern, the railway administration has made the decision to incorporate a ramp into the design of the new 12-meter-long pedestrian bridge, ensuring accessibility for all passengers.

The older pedestrian bridge, which was temporarily closed during the COVID-19 pandemic due to its deteriorating condition, was reopened after minor repairs and has been serving passengers. Nevertheless, it will soon be replaced as part of these comprehensive upgrades, with the ramps connected to it being retained and extended to link with the new 12-meter bridge. This innovative project is aimed at making the station more user-friendly, particularly for disabled individuals, senior citizens, and female passengers.

Anticipated to benefit approximately 150,000 daily passengers at Pune Railway Station, where 250 trains operate on 6 platforms, the new development will enhance accessibility and elevate the overall travel experience. Pune Railway Station currently boasts four pedestrian bridges and facilitates the departure and arrival of 72 trains, including 41 local rounds as part of its daily operations.
