Empowering Change: Pune Family Takes Action to Mend Potholes and Aid Commuters

In a heartening display of initiative, a family of three, including a seven-year-old boy, has taken up the challenge of alleviating the plight of commuters grappling with pothole-ridden roads near Nyati Ethos in Undri, Pune.

Fahmin Hussain Sutlej, one of the members of this proactive family, explained the motivation behind their mission, stating, “Seeing the struggles that commuters face as they navigate through potholes to ensure safe passage, and with the start of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on August 15, 2023, we felt compelled to contribute by repairing these road hazards. Embracing the wisdom of the famous adage ‘You must be the change you want to see,’ our vision is to witness our city free of potholes.”

Elaborating on their efforts, she added, “The ongoing mission to fix potholes on Nyati Ethos Road has already resulted in the repair of six potholes. On Independence Day, we successfully addressed fifteen potholes along Undri Road, using basic resources like bricks, cement, and sand to ensure the safety of travelers. Our expenses were minimal as we transported these materials by car. Upon reaching the identified sites, we promptly located the potholes and initiated immediate repairs.”

She highlighted, “While the materials used for these repairs might not provide a permanent solution for the potholes, they significantly reduce the risk of accidents in our vicinity. This proactive step aims to mitigate recurring mishaps. I hope this initiative will inspire the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to adopt a more robust and sincere approach towards road repairs.”

Ashish Jagtap, another member of the family, shared, “Prompted by our seven-year-old son’s curious questions about the potholes during our city travels, we chose to channel our energy constructively, free from grandiose claims, resentment, or complaints. In a city where nearly every road is marred by potholes, sometimes spanning the entire stretch, we understood the gravity of the situation leading to daily dangers and accidents. It is essential for all of us to collaborate in improving this situation, without pointing fingers, as we strive to create safer roads.”

He continued, “While working on the bustling road, it was hard not to notice the gaze of passersby. Their encouraging looks and words of appreciation were a testament to the positivity our efforts generated. Two-wheeler riders particularly commended our work. Interestingly, a group of enthusiastic youngsters in their twenties joined our mission with zeal, strengthening my determination. This experience has kindled a commitment within me to dedicate one day each week to mend as many potholes as possible. My goal is to progressively address all the potholes in our vicinity, fostering safer roads for everyone.”
