Election Commission Cracks Down on Voter List Irregularities in Pune

In a significant development, the Election Commission has initiated the process of rectifying discrepancies in the voter list in Pune district, uncovering irregularities that include double name registrations and identical photographs for 1 lakh 42 thousand 349 voters. Responding promptly, the Election Commission has issued notices, termed as ‘Sample A,’ to the affected voters, urging them to rectify the identified issues.

Under Sections 17 and 18 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, each voter is entitled to have only one entry in the electoral roll. However, instances of names being recorded in more than one place have come to light during this cleanup process. Notices have been dispatched to the concerned voters to facilitate corrections and adherence to electoral regulations.

Rajesh Deshmukh, the Collector and District Election Officer, has appealed to the affected voters to carefully choose the correct location on the notice, indicating where they intend to have their name. Voters are required to mark the appropriate location and upload the notice along with a photocopy of their Aadhaar card to the designated email address. Alternatively, they can visit the designated voter center level officer to process the confirmation letter.

The deadline for making corrections has been set for January 1, 2024. Deshmukh emphasized that legal action will be taken against voters found with names in two places after the conclusion of this cleanup campaign, as per the recommendations of the Election Commission. This initiative is aimed at ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the electoral roll in preparation for upcoming elections.
