Education Department Issues Notices to Schools for Early Class Start Times

In a move to enforce uniformity in school schedules across the region, the primary education department has initiated steps to address schools that continue to commence classes before 9 am. This decision comes in response to a government directive aimed at standardizing morning session timings for primary education institutions.

Government Directive and Implementation

Governor Ramesh Bais highlighted the importance of reconsidering school timings during a program held on December 5, 2023. Subsequently, a government resolution was issued mandating all primary schools, regardless of board affiliation, to schedule classes for pre-primary to class 4 to begin at 9 am or later starting from the academic year 2024-25.

While some schools promptly adjusted their schedules following consultations with stakeholders such as parents and transport providers, reports indicate that a significant number of schools have continued with their previous timetables.

Show Cause Notices

In light of this discrepancy, the primary education department has announced its intention to issue show cause notices to schools found in violation of the mandated timings. According to Sharad Gosavi, Director of Primary Education, any school planning to commence classes before 9 am must seek explicit permission from education authorities.

Challenges and Responses

Acknowledging the logistical challenges posed by abrupt schedule changes, a principal from Pune explained, “It is not feasible for us to suddenly alter class timings set by the state government. Such changes necessitate adjustments in the schedules of teaching staff, as well as coordination with school buses, vans, and autos.”
