Dwindling Water Levels in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Dams Raise Concerns

Pune Rains

Pune, August 12th, 2023: The city of Pune, along with its neighboring region Pimpri Chinchwad, is facing a concerning situation as the water levels in the major dams that supply water to these areas have significantly decreased compared to the same period last year. The drop in water levels can be attributed to the decreased rainfall activity in Pune and various parts of Maharashtra.

Official reports indicate that the cumulative water storage in the four dams constituting the Khadakwasla cluster stands at 90.42% (26.36 TMC) on the present date. This stands in stark contrast to the figures from the corresponding date last year, which boasted a healthier water storage percentage of 96.03% (27.99 TMC).

Among these dams, the Khadakwasla Dam is currently holding 81.43% of its total water capacity (1.61 TMC), the Panshet Dam is at 99.13% water capacity (11.58 TMC), the Warasgaon Dam stands at 90.35% capacity (11.58 TMC), and the Temghar Dam reports a water storage of 70.47% (2.61 TMC). To make matters more pressing, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted only “light to moderate rain” for Pune up until August 15th.

The situation echoes across other dams in the district, with the Pawana Dam, responsible for supplying water to Pimpri Chinchwad, also experiencing a notable drop in water levels. As of the most recent data available on Saturday, the Pawana Dam holds a water storage of 95.26%. This is notably lower than the figure from the corresponding date in the previous year, which boasted a more robust water storage of 97.17%.
