DRDO Unveils ‘Ugram’: Indigenous Assault Rifle Redefining India’s Defense Arsenal

Pune: In a significant leap towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has introduced an indigenous assault rifle named ‘Ugram’ in collaboration with a Hyderabad-based private firm. This marks a historic moment as it signifies the first-ever partnership between a DRDO lab and the private industry to produce a 7.62 x 51 mm calibre rifle, addressing the operational needs of the Indian armed forces, paramilitary forces, and state police.

Ugram: A Technological Marvel for Varied Forces

The ‘Ugram’ assault rifle, meaning ‘ferocious,’ is meticulously designed and developed to cater to the diverse operational requirements of the Indian defense and security apparatus. Weighing less than four kilograms and boasting a firing range of 500 meters, the rifle promises enhanced efficiency and adaptability in the field. The launch event witnessed Shailendra Gade, the director general of the Armament and Combat Engineering (ACE) system of the DRDO, unveiling this technological marvel.

Strategic Collaboration with Private Firm

A crucial aspect of this achievement is the adoption of the Development Cum Production Partner (DCPP) concept, marking the involvement of a private firm in the project. The ARDE and the private firm collaborated closely, following the General Staff Qualitative Requirements (GSQRs) issued by the Indian Army for assault rifles. The partnership emphasizes the government’s commitment to fostering collaboration between public and private sectors for cutting-edge defense technologies.

Rapid Development and Future Testing Plans

The collaborative effort between ARDE and the private firm resulted in the development of the ‘Ugram’ assault rifle within an impressive timeframe of 100 days. Now, the weapon will undergo comprehensive internal trials at the firing range to assess various aspects of its performance before advancing to user trials. A board of officers, representing the Indian Army, will conduct extensive user trials in diverse conditions, including high-altitude regions and deserts, to ensure the rifle meets the stringent requirements.

Dedicated Barrel Manufacturing Unit for Enhanced Capabilities

The ARDE has further fortified its capabilities by establishing a dedicated barrel manufacturing facility on its campus. With an investment of Rs 60 crore, this facility equipped with advanced machinery imported from Austria will play a pivotal role in quick and cost-effective barrel production for various weapons. The move aims to support private industries in their weapon manufacturing projects, fostering a collaborative ecosystem.

Paving the Way for Indigenous Defense Solutions

The successful collaboration and rapid development of the ‘Ugram’ assault rifle underscore India’s commitment to fostering indigenous defense solutions. This initiative not only contributes to reducing dependence on foreign imports but also positions the country as a hub for cutting-edge defense manufacturing.
