Clear Skies and Fresh Air: Pune’s Respite from Recent Air Quality Woes

In a welcome relief for Pune residents, the city’s air quality has exhibited a noticeable improvement after nearly 14 days of experiencing moderate to poor air quality, which posed serious health concerns. On Thursday, Pune’s air quality was recorded at a satisfactory level, accompanied by a significant reduction in both PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels.

The data from SAFAR-IITM reveals that the air quality is expected to continue improving in the days ahead. However, areas with high traffic flow and ongoing construction activities, such as Shivajinagar, Swargate, Katraj, and others, may still have higher pollution levels. Since October 12, the city has witnessed a surge in air pollution, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 111. During this period, both PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels in the atmosphere exceeded the standards set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The situation reached its peak on October 23, with the highest AQI recorded at 145. The concentration of PM 10 was measured at 110 micrograms per cubic meter, while PM 2.5 levels stood at 70 micrograms per cubic meter. In response to these concerning levels, SAFAR-IITM issued a yellow alert, signifying moderate-quality air that poses health risks, especially for individuals with respiratory issues.

However, experts attribute the recent improvement in air quality to favorable atmospheric conditions. Clear skies, devoid of cloud cover that could trap pollutants in the lower atmosphere, have prevailed. Additionally, increased wind circulation has played a role in dispersing pollutant concentrations. This positive trend is expected to continue as the city enjoys a reprieve under clear skies.
