Bombay High Court Grants Police Protection to Same-Sex Couple in Pune

Pune, 6th July 2023: In a landmark decision, the Bombay High Court has issued a directive to the Pune City Police to provide police protection to a same-sex couple residing in Pune. The couple approached the court after one of them faced violence at the hands of her family, who also forcefully took her to their hometown in Solapur, against her wishes.

The couple, aged 28 and 32, first connected on a social media platform in 2020. One of them, originally from Bihar, relocated to Pune to be with her partner, who hails from Solapur. They established their lives together in Pune until the partner’s family intervened, forcibly removing her from the city due to their disapproval of the relationship.

Fortunately, the woman managed to escape from Solapur and returned to Pune, where she works as a nurse, while her partner is a double graduate. Fearing for their safety and seeking legal protection, they approached the Bombay High Court for assistance.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the police authorities assured the court that the couple would be provided with two plain-clothed police constables for their security. This step aims to safeguard the couple’s well-being and offer them a sense of security and freedom to live their lives without fear.

In addition, the High Court has instructed the police not to entertain any missing person complaints filed by the woman’s family, as their actions were in violation of her autonomy and rights. This ruling underscores the importance of respecting individual choices and relationships, irrespective of gender or sexual orientation.

The court has scheduled a hearing for the petition after two weeks, demonstrating its commitment to ensuring justice and safeguarding the fundamental rights of the couple. This case sets a significant precedent and emphasizes the need for legal protection and acceptance of same-sex relationships in society.
