Balancing Growth: Pune’s Third Municipal Corporation Proposal Takes Center Stage

In the wake of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations, discussions about the establishment of a third Municipal Corporation are gaining momentum in Pune district. The proposed Municipal Corporation would encompass Chakan Municipal Council, Alandi Municipal Council, Rajgurunagar Municipal Council, and the surrounding villages. The state government has solicited a comprehensive report from Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao, seeking insights and feedback on this potential development.

The inclusion of a substantial number of villages within Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations has led to an expansion of their boundaries. Consequently, there is a growing consensus that it may not be practical to include more villages under PMC & PCMC. Advocates for this initiative argue in favor of creating a new municipal corporation that would cover Chakan Municipal Council, Alandi Municipal Council, Rajguru Municipal Council, and the villages in their adjacent areas.

The state government is actively considering the formation of an independent Municipal Corporation, incorporating Chakan, Alandi, and Rajguru municipal councils, along with the surrounding villages. To facilitate this process, factors such as the total area, population, and boundaries of Chakan Municipal Council, Alandi Municipal Council, Rajguru Municipal Council, and their surrounding villages must be thoroughly evaluated.

In pursuit of establishing an independent Municipal Corporation for the three municipal councils, the state government has mandated that key officials submit comprehensive reports. This includes the Chief Executive Officer of Pune Zilla Parishad, Pune District Collector, Commissioner of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, PCMC & PMC Commissioners, and officials from Chakan, Alandi, and Rajguru municipal councils. The state government has specifically requested a detailed report from Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao.

The deliberations surrounding this potential development are crucial, and stakeholders are keenly awaiting the comprehensive report that will shed light on the viability and implications of establishing a third Municipal Corporation in Pune district.
