Pune: As the inauguration date for the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya draws near, the city of Pune is experiencing a vibrant festive atmosphere with an unprecedented surge in the sale of Ram idols, Ayodhya temple models, and related paraphernalia. Shopkeepers in the vicinity of the Ram Mandir in Tulshibaug are witnessing a bustling market reminiscent of Diwali, as Punekars gear up for the grand occasion on January 22.

Rising Demand for Ram Idols: Rajesh Thakkar, the proprietor of Happy Collections, established in 1963, shares the remarkable increase in the sale of Ram idols over the past two months. The Ayodhya temple models crafted from metal have also garnered significant interest, with daily sales ranging from 10 to 15 pieces. Thakkar expresses his surprise at the unexpected demand for special crowns designed for Lord Ram idols, emphasizing that the festive spirit is akin to the Diwali celebration.

Community Seva Amidst Celebrations: Yogesh Chaudhary, another shop owner in the vicinity, highlights the repeated restocking of marble and brass idols of Ram due to overwhelming demand. He mentions that every third customer is seeking a Ram idol, and sales are exceeding expectations. Chaudhary, emphasizing the spirit of seva (service), states that the prices are reasonable to ensure that every household can have a Ram idol on January 22.

Cultural Celebrations and Costume Shopping: The festive buzz extends beyond idol purchases, as customers like Shilpa express their eagerness to find a large Ram idol for installation in their new homes. Another couple is on the lookout for a Ram costume for their four-year-old to participate in the pooja and celebrations within their housing society.

Specialized Clothing for the Occasion: Rajendra Kailash Puri, who runs a legacy store, has introduced specially designed kurtas with ‘Jai Shree Ram’ prints. The demand has been overwhelming, with 200 pieces sold within 15 days. Puri mentions that the celebratory atmosphere has prompted people to actively seek such cultural clothing without the need for extensive publicity.

Traditional Art and Heritage Businesses Thriving: At heritage businesses like Murudkar Zendewale and Fetewale in Budhwar Peth, Girish Murudkar notes an increase in the sale of items like flags, badges, and saffron fetas. The heritage store, operational for three generations, is witnessing a surge in footfall reminiscent of Diwali, indicating the widespread participation of Pune residents in the festive preparations.

Artistic Expression with Marble Arts: Hemant Dixit, the owner of Dixit Marble Arts, reports a definitive upswing in the sale of Ram idols over the past four months, underlining the community’s enthusiastic engagement with cultural and religious celebrations.

As Pune embraces the joyous preparations for the Ayodhya temple inauguration, the city resonates with the spirit of celebration and cultural pride.
