RTO and PMPML Squads Impose Fines on 1,620 Vehicle Owners for Traffic Violations
In an effort to streamline public transportation and ensure smooth flow of traffic, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) and Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) have jointly imposed fines on owners of 1,620 autorickshaws, cab aggregators, and other private vehicles for illegally halting and picking up passengers from PMPML stands. This crackdown, conducted between January 1 and March 31 this year, aims to enforce regulations prohibiting private vehicles from obstructing bus operations within a 50-meter radius of PMPML bus stops or stands.
The initiative comes in response to numerous complaints lodged by PMPML drivers, passengers, and advocacy groups, citing instances of parked rickshaws and other private vehicles causing traffic congestion and hindering the smooth functioning of bus services.
Led by two joint vigilance teams comprising four officers each, alongside an RTO officer, one team deployed in Pune city and another in Pimpri-Chinchwad city, the enforcement drive resulted in fines totaling ₹3,32,000 imposed on traffic violators during the three-month period.
Sanjay Kolte, Chairman and Managing Director of PMPML, emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations governing public transportation infrastructure. He stated, “If rickshaws and other private vehicles are observed near PMPML bus stands, strict action will be taken against their owners.”
The collaborative efforts between RTO and PMPML underscore the authorities’ commitment to ensuring the efficient operation of public transit systems and promoting adherence to traffic regulations. By penalizing violators and enforcing compliance with established rules, the initiative aims to enhance commuter safety and improve the overall transport experience for residents of Pune.
