Innovative Solution Empowers Consumers to Identify Genuine Produce with Ease”

As the mango season kicks off and the market floods with the “king of fruits,” distinguishing between authentic Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri and other varieties becomes a challenge for many buyers.

With concerns over counterfeit mangoes, particularly those from Karnataka, looming large, the innovative solution of QR codes on mangoes empowers consumers to distinguish genuine Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes with unprecedented ease.

According to mango traders, daily more than 100 boxes of Ratnagiri Alphonso with QR codes arrive at the market. This technology-based solution provides consumers with a simple yet powerful tool to authenticate the origin and quality of their mangoes, ensuring they experience the renowned flavor and excellence of Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes.

Arvind More, a mango trader at Market Yard, highlighted, “Through this innovative technique, customers can easily check the area of origin, details of farmers, and information on nutrients and fertilizers used, ensuring transparency and authenticity in their purchase.”

As demand for QR code-tagged mangoes increases, consumers express satisfaction with the initiative, acknowledging the peace of mind it brings in ensuring they’re purchasing genuine Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes.

Dinesh Sonawane, a consumer, expressed, “I am impressed with the initiative. Every time, we have to spend time to identify genuine Ratnagiri Alphonso. There are also high chances of being duped by the traders as many try to sell other mangoes by the brand name Ratnagiri Alphonso. So we have to be cautious while purchasing.”

After scanning the QR code, consumers gain access to vital details such as variety name, region, nutritional value, farmer’s name, orchid location, packaging and ripening dates, along with insights into farming practices like fertilizers or pesticides used.

The implementation of QR codes benefits not only consumers but also farmers, ensuring recognition and appreciation for their hard work, while reinforcing trust in locally sourced produce.

Makrand Kane, a farmer from Reel village in Ratnagiri district, emphasized, “This is the first year we are using the QR code method to provide authentic Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes to customers. The QR code has a specific expiry date, preventing misuse and ensuring integrity.”
