Air Quality Emergency: Pune’s Call to Action After Diwali and Construction Surge

Pune Municipal Corporation

In a distressing development, Pune finds itself grappling with a severe degradation in air quality, joining the ranks of Indian cities facing environmental challenges akin to Delhi and Mumbai. The air quality index (AQI) has surged from 150 to 263 in the past two weeks, necessitating swift action from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

This surge in air pollution is attributed to a confluence of factors, including heightened construction activities and the recent Diwali celebrations, where a significant volume of firecrackers contributed to increased carbon emissions and noise pollution.

The PMC has promptly initiated measures to combat the escalating air pollution crisis. Notices have been issued to construction professionals and the metro administration in alignment with directives from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The municipal corporation is actively gathering information on steps taken by workplaces to prevent dust pollution.

To counter pollution in crowded areas, the PMC is gearing up to install mist-based fountains, aiming to mitigate the impact of particulate matter. Simultaneously, a comprehensive plan is reportedly in progress to implement various measures aimed at enhancing overall air quality in the city.

The aftermath of Diwali has further exacerbated the situation, with the widespread use of firecrackers during Lakshmi Pujan and Narak Chaturdashi. The chemicals released during these celebrations have significantly contributed to the alarming increase in carbon emissions and noise pollution.

Health experts are sounding the alarm on the potential health hazards posed by the current air quality levels. Residents are strongly advised to take necessary precautions and adhere to safety guidelines provided by authorities. The PMC urges citizens to cooperate in the implementation of measures to curb air pollution and work collectively towards restoring Pune’s air quality to safer levels. The situation remains under close scrutiny as authorities continue to monitor and respond to the evolving crisis.
