Pune : The Afghan Students Association in India, a voice of hope for Afghan scholars, urgently appeals to the Indian In light of the ongoing turmoil, Afghan students are also earnestly requesting an extension of visas, along with a resolution to the impending exit permit issue. Furthermore, we urgently address a disturbing concern – the denial of educational opportunities faced by Afghan students due to external influences. Compounding this, some students have received distressing emails from the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) demanding Bonafide certificates or departure from India, despite the absence of admissions and scholarships, leading to shattered dreams and a future in limbo.

Critical Financial Pressure: Afghan students in India are grappling with severe financial strain due to the persistent instability in Afghanistan. The specter of uncertain futures underscores the urgency of their appeal for financial assistance.

Humanitarian Obligation: As a beacon of humanitarian values, ICCR is implored to recognize the ethical responsibility of helping Afghan students facing financial hardship and an uncertain destiny.

Historical Support: Building upon a legacy of support, the Government of India’s commitment to Afghan scholars has enabled education and healthcare access. With a modest number of applicants, the impact of extending scholarships is substantial.
Virtual Family of Support: ICCR and India have become a nurturing family for Afghan students, providing emotional and mental stability under challenging circumstances. This support is integral to enabling academic pursuits and future aspirations.

Global Image of India: Failing to offer support would not only impact the lives of vulnerable students but also cast a shadow over India’s humanitarian standing, contrary to its ethos of compassion and aid.

Initiating Action: Afghan Students in India have actively conveyed their concerns to ICCR officials through the Afghanistan Embassy in Delhi. This collective appeal highlights the ongoing challenges Afghan students face due to the prevailing situation.
Visa Extensions: In addition to scholarships, Afghan students also urgently appeal for visa extensions. The complex ircumstances in Afghanistan necessitate compassionate consideration for their extended stay in India

Exit Permit Resolution: Many students are at risk of overstay, which could lead to exit permit complications. We urge ICCR and the Ministry of External Affairs to promptly approve scholarships, extend students’ visas, and provide a clear resolution to exit permit concerns.

Equal Educational Opportunities: Disturbingly, some universities have reportedly ceased admitting Afghan students under external influences. We appeal for equal educational opportunities for Afghan scholars, unhindered by political considerations.
FRRO Emails: The distressing emails from FRRO, demanding bonafide certificates or departure, further exacerbate the challenges faced by Afghan students. Leaving them with shattered dreams and a future in limbo, these actions must be reconsidered with compassion.

Number of Students in Crisis: Presently, the number of students with an uncertain future and recent graduates’ totals approximately 1000, of which 200 are female. Their educational aspirations hang in the balance, necessitating immediate assistance.

The Afghan Students Association in India urgently calls upon ICCR to respond swiftly to their multi-faceted appeal, encompassing scholarships, visa extensions, exit permit resolution, equal educational opportunities, and compassionate treatment. By doing so, ICCR will not only empower individual lives but also reinforce the enduring bond of friendship between us.
