Advanced Traffic Monitoring System Set to Launch on Bangalore-Mysore Expressway

In an effort to curb rampant traffic violations and enhance road safety, India is set to inaugurate a Smart Traffic Management System (ITMS) on the Bangalore-Mysore expressway starting July 1, 2024. This initiative aims to address the significant number of rule-breaking incidents contributing to accidents annually.

Overview of the ITMS

The ITMS, initially launched in Bangalore in 2022, utilizes advanced technology to monitor and manage traffic more effectively. High-definition CCTV cameras installed at key intersections are capable of recognizing up to 250 automatic number plates and are supported by 80 red-light violation detection (RLD) cameras. This sophisticated system will now be expanded to Mysore city and district, with an estimated cost of ₹8.5 million, of which ₹4 million is allocated specifically for Mysore.

Real-time Monitoring and Enforcement

According to the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for traffic, the ITMS will facilitate real-time monitoring and issuance of fines to vehicles violating traffic regulations. A dedicated traffic management center has been established in Mysore to support this initiative. The center will send immediate SMS alerts to the owners of offending vehicles based on the registration numbers captured by the cameras.

Enhancing Road Safety

The rollout of the ITMS on the Bangalore-Mysore expressway underscores the government’s commitment to implementing stringent measures against traffic violators. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the system aims to promote safer travel experiences on one of South India’s busiest expressways. The introduction of ITMS is expected to significantly reduce the number of accidents caused by traffic violations, thus improving overall road safety.

Key Features and Benefits

  1. High-Definition Surveillance: The system employs high-definition CCTV cameras that provide clear and detailed images, essential for accurate vehicle identification and monitoring.
  2. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR): This feature ensures that vehicles violating traffic rules are promptly identified and fined, promoting adherence to traffic laws.
  3. Red-Light Violation Detection: The RLD cameras play a crucial role in reducing red-light jumping incidents, which are a major cause of accidents.
  4. Real-Time Alerts: Offending vehicle owners receive immediate SMS notifications, ensuring that violations are swiftly addressed.
  5. Cost and Implementation: With a significant investment of ₹8.5 million, the project reflects the government’s dedication to leveraging technology for public safety.
