Pune: Only 23 pubs, discotheques have necessary permissions, reveals RTI query

Pune Crime News

Pune: There are hundreds of pubs and discotheques in the city and its surroundings. But most of them have not been issued necessary permissions by the police authorities.

This has been revealed in a reply to a Right To Information (RTI) query filed by Adv Sameer Shaikh. Only 23 pubs and discotheques have necessary permissions. And permission given to one of them has also been cancelled.

The Pune Police have replied to Shaikh’s query, in which the list of 23 authorised pubs and discotheques has been given. One of them has also been cancelled.

A press release issued by Shaikh stated: “Now, it is clear that stringent efforts and will power are needed to monitor such establishments to ensure public safety and no repetition of such incidents in the future.

Demand for permanent closure

Adv Shaikh, on behalf of citizens, has demanded permanent closure of such illegal businesses. New permissions should not be issued to such commercial establishments.

He said, “Recent actions by authorities are welcome. But timely action and checking of illegal businesses from violating rules is needed. The government machinery must prove through their action that they care for common people’s security and that they are committed to maintain law and order in the city.

“The police have taken some positive steps such as making it mandatory to close pubs, bars and restaurants before 1.30 am and conducting breathalyzer tests to check drunk driving at night. But this needs to be done continuously. The authorities must ensure compliance with the law and must take action so that such establishments do not reopen in the future.

“The police and the civic body have started taking stringent action against pubs and bars after the hit-and-run case in Kalyani Nagar. The incident revealed how some pub owners violated the rules. It also exposes the failure of the government agencies to take timely action against them due to unknown reasons. It is really unfortunate that a small vendor or hawker cannot run their business without permission. But swanky bars and pubs are run by violating rules with impunity,” stated the release issued by Adv Sameer Shaikh.
