Water Crisis Escalates in PCMC: Reduction in Daily Supply Sparks Concerns

Water Supply

In response to a diminishing water capacity in Pavana Dam, the water supply department of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced a reduction in daily water supply by 15 minutes for residents in Pimpri Chinchwad, starting from December 15. The move aims to address the pressing water crisis in the region.

Concerns Raised: City Engineer of PCMC’s water supply department has recommended this reduction, urging citizens to use water judiciously. The decision has prompted concerns among residents and community leaders who are questioning the sustainability of new construction projects amid the existing water supply challenges.

Dattatray Deshmukh, Chairman of the Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Society Federation, expressed frustration, highlighting the strain on water resources due to ongoing construction in new townships. Deshmukh questioned the rationale behind granting construction permissions for new developments when the current infrastructure struggles to meet the water demands of the existing population.

PCMC’s Plea for Additional Water: In a bid to address the burgeoning water needs of the city, PCMC has submitted a formal request to the water resources department, seeking an additional 9.81 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet) of water supply from Mulshi dam. The city presently operates on an alternate day water supply schedule.

A senior PCMC official emphasized the necessity of securing additional water resources to accommodate the growing population and escalating water requirements. The appeal to the water resources department underscores the severity of the water scarcity issue in Pimpri Chinchwad.

Community Concerns and Action Plans: Residents and community leaders plan to raise the water supply challenges during upcoming meetings with PCMC authorities. The Federation aims to address the disconnect between the rising population, construction projects, and the current capacity to manage the water crisis effectively.
