Reviving Indrayani: The Need for a Common Action Plan and Government Support

The Indrayani River, a lifeline for Pimpri-Chinchwad and its environs, is grappling with severe pollution issues that demand immediate governmental intervention. Over the years, various stakeholders including the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), PMRDA, MIDC, and local municipal councils have made efforts towards rejuvenating this vital waterway. However, BJP MLA Mahesh Landge underscores the necessity for a unified ‘Common Action Plan’ involving all key authorities to effectively tackle the river’s pollution woes.

The Current Situation

Flowing through Pimpri-Chinchwad, the Indrayani and Pavana rivers bear the brunt of pollution from a burgeoning population exceeding 3 million. The riverbanks are marred by sewage, solid waste, plastic debris, and other pollutants, endangering aquatic life and posing significant health hazards to the public. Recognizing the urgency, a consultancy firm was commissioned in 2018 to draft a Detailed Project Report (DPR) aimed at expediting the river’s restoration.

The Indrayani River spans 20.6 km within Pimpri-Chinchwad, divided between municipal and PMRDA jurisdictions. Coordination is pivotal to secure necessary approvals and funding, particularly from PMRDA, to ensure seamless progress of the rejuvenation efforts.

Local Initiatives and Challenges

PCMC has initiated sewage treatment plants along the riverbanks to treat effluents before their discharge, alongside efforts to clear encroachments. However, similar initiatives are required from neighboring councils such as Lonavala, Vadgaon, Talegaon Dabhade, Dehu Road Cantonment, Dehu Municipal Panchayat, and Alandi. Cooperation from PMRDA, MIDC, and district administrations is imperative for a comprehensive approach towards river rejuvenation, spanning from its origin to confluence.

River Rejuvenation Project Details

The proposed rejuvenation plan encompasses a spectrum of measures including riverbank beautification, flood control mechanisms like gabion and R.E. walls, and installation of large-scale interceptor sewer lines and pumping stations. Modular plants for treating domestic and industrial wastewater are planned, complemented by amenities such as parks, cycling paths, and public access areas along the riverbanks. The vision also includes developing theme parks, restaurants, and entertainment centers to sustain maintenance costs.

Current Status and Future Prospects

Project consultants have conducted exhaustive surveys and prepared conceptual plans, pending environmental clearances and tender issuances. MLA Mahesh Landge has committed to raising the urgency of the Indrayani Rejuvenation Project during the upcoming assembly session, emphasizing the need for swift action and government support. Efforts are underway to secure approvals under the central government’s AMRUT 2.0 scheme, requiring proactive involvement from the state administration.
