Pune’s War on Narcotics: A Comprehensive Effort Leads to Rs 14.55 Crore Seizure

Pune District has witnessed a significant victory in its battle against narcotics, with a remarkable seizure of illegal drugs worth Rs 14.55 crores by October 2023. This commendable achievement resulted from a coordinated effort between the Pune City Police Commissionerate, Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate, Pune Rural Police, and Pune Government Railway Police. The operation also led to the apprehension of 504 individuals involved in illicit drug activities.

Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, the Collector of Pune, underscored the unwavering commitment of the District Level Narcotics Control Center Committee in liberating citizens from the clutches of narcotics. He urged citizens to report any information related to illegal drug smuggling, sale, or cultivation to the nearest police station or committee member’s office.

In response to the growing menace of narcotic drugs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has issued directives for the establishment of a District Level Anti-Narcotics Central Committee. Chaired by the District Collector, this committee comprises 13 members, including key officials from various departments. They hold monthly meetings under the guidance of the Collector.

The committee’s primary objective is to implement effective measures against the rising use of narcotic drugs in the district and address the narcotic drug problem efficiently. Collaborating closely with the police department, the committee has taken significant actions against illegal smuggling, cultivation, use, sale, and consumption of narcotic drugs.

Efforts to prevent the illicit cultivation of narcotic plants in forest and agricultural areas involve joint actions by the forest department, agriculture department, and revenue department. Public awareness campaigns are actively underway to educate farmers about the prohibition on cultivating narcotic plants. The School Education Department and District Surgeon are also actively involved in creating awareness in schools and colleges regarding the health effects and financial losses associated with drug consumption. Coordinators have been appointed in educational institutions to further this initiative.

The district has seen a series of events, including marathons, street plays, rallies, and lectures, organized on World Anti-Drug Day. The Social Welfare Department conducts periodic inspections of de-addiction and rehabilitation centers, extending assistance to individuals grappling with drug-related issues. The Food and Drug Administration Department plays a pivotal role in inspecting drug manufacturing companies, ensuring compliance with regulations.
