Pune: Speed of PMPML buses to be locked at 50 km; Errant drivers to be reined in

PUNE / PIMPRI: PMPML administration has issued orders to depot engineers and contractors to lock the bus speed at 50 km. This is going to rein in overspeeding drivers.
Overspeeding by drivers has increased leading to mishaps involving PMPML buses. From April to September, 75 accidents have taken place and 19 people have lost their life. Seventy-three people have been injured. It has come to light that many accidents have taken place due to overspeeding. Hence, the administration has issued orders to depot engineers to lock the speed of the buses at 50 km. Contractors of buses which have been rented out to PMPML, have also been told to lock the speed. After the speed is locked, the report of the buses will have to be submitted by transport manager. Passengers will have safe journey after the speed is locked.

Statistics of mishaps in last three years

April 2021 to March 2022: 79 mishaps, 18 deaths, 52 injured

April 2022 to March 2023: 133 mishaps, 22 deaths, 151 injured

April to September 2023: 75 mishaps, 19 deaths, 73 injured

Nitin Narvekar, Joint MD, PMPML said, “PMPML’s main objective is to ensure that passengers have a safe ride. Some accidents had taken place due to overspeeding. Hence, it has been decided to lock the speed of buses. Speed of all buses will be locked in next fortnight.”

Sanjay Shitole, Secretary, PMP Pravasi Manch said, “This decision is welcome in view of passengers’ security. It will be interesting to see this decision is implemented for how many days.”
