Pune Resident Falls Victim to Cryptocurrency Fraud, Loses Rs 1.27 Crore

In a distressing incident of cyber fraud that has rattled Pune, a 46-year-old man hailing from Bhosari has fallen prey to a cryptocurrency scam, resulting in a staggering loss of Rs 1.27 crore. The victim was led astray by unknown individuals who lured him into a fraudulent investment scheme under the guise of Crypto Currency Trading. The duplicitous interactions occurred through platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp.

According to the police complaint lodged by the victim, the fraudsters artfully promised substantial returns on investment in the domain of Crypto Currency trading. Eager to seize this purported opportunity, the victim deposited a total of Rs 1,27,29,700 into the accounts of the scammers. However, his hopes were soon shattered when he realized the deception, prompting him to approach the police and file a formal complaint.

The victim’s account of the incident reveals that the fraudsters encouraged him to funnel his funds into crypto trading applications such as GEE and CAE between the months of July and August of this year. Subsequently, as the truth emerged, the victim found himself in a precarious situation and decided to seek legal intervention.

The authorities have sprung into action, invoking relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), and 406 (criminal breach of trust), along with section 66(d) of the Information Technology Act. The case has been registered with the Bhosari MIDC Police Station, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to unearth more details about the perpetrators and the extent of the scam.
