Pune: PMC to seek 20.90 TMC water

PUNE: Considering the increasing population and the number of people coming to Pune for employment, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is going to make a demand to the Water Resources Department seeking 20.90 TMC water supply. The PMC is going to submit a letter to the Water Resources Department in July last week.

Pune city is supplied water from Khadakwasla dam project, Bhama Askhed dam and Ravet barrage but the major part of the city is dependent on Khadakwasla dam project. As per the agreement with PMC’s Water Supply Department, 12.41 TMC water is made available.

The demand for water is increasing every year because of the increasing population and inclusion of 34 villages in civic limits. The civic body has to present a water estimate report every year to the Water Resources Department as per orders given by the State Water Resources Regulatory Authority.

An average increase of two per cent in the population is considered. Considering the two per cent increase in the population in 34 villages and the number of people coming to Pune for service, business and education, next year, water will have to be supplied to 72 lakh people. After accounting for 35 per cent leakage, the PMC has sought 20.90 TMC water. Last year, it had sought 20.34 TMC water.

However, the Water Resources Department had sanctioned 12.41 TMC water according to their calculations. The water supply department’ estimated report demanding 20.90 TMC water will be presented to Civic Chief Vikram Kumar for his approval. After his approval, the report will be submitted to the Water Resources Department.

Aniruddh Pavaskar, Chief of Water Supply Department, said, “The PMC has prepared a water estimate report for 2023-24 and a demand for 20.90 TMC water is going to be made to the Water Resources Department. The report will be sent to it by July end.”
