Pollution Crisis Grips the Sacred Indrayani: PCMC and Alandi Municipal Council at Odds

Today morning, the serene waters of the holy Indrayani River in Alandi, Maharashtra, once again turned ominous as pollution foams surfaced, reigniting environmental concerns. Despite government interventions and local efforts, the condition of the Indrayani remains precarious, signaling a deepening pollution crisis that impacts both the environment and the communities dependent on the river.

Escalating Pollution despite Government Directives

The Maharashtra government, led by School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, acknowledged the escalating pollution on December 26, 2023. Urgent directives were issued to halt untreated sewage release, emphasizing the cultural importance of the Indrayani. Despite these measures, pollution levels persist, posing a threat to public health and environmental sustainability.

The Toll of River Pollution

Contaminated water not only jeopardizes public health, leading to waterborne diseases, but also disrupts aquatic ecosystems, compromises biodiversity, and hampers the availability of safe drinking water. Pollution in urban rivers, including the Indrayani, stems from diverse sources such as industrial discharges, untreated sewage, improper waste disposal, agricultural runoff, and lax regulations.

Municipal Authorities Respond

The Chief Officer of Alandi Municipal Council, Kailash Kendre, highlighted the recurring issue and emphasized coordination with other authorities to address the problem. On the PCMC side, Joint City Engineer (Environment) Sanjay Kulkarni explained implemented measures and attributed the sporadic foaming to additional river discharges, blaming unofficial constructions and activities.

Residents Caught in the Crossfire

The ongoing blame game between PCMC and Alandi Municipal Council has left residents grappling with health issues and unpleasant river odors. The historical and cultural significance of the Indrayani is at stake, as the pollution crisis deepens. Residents, represented by Sanjivan Sangale of the Chikhali-Moshi-Pimpri Chinchwad City Housing Society Federation, express concern over chemical-laden water affecting the river’s purity and marine life.

Urgent Plea for Action

Residents and devotees along the sacred banks of the Indrayani are urging authorities to take decisive actions to protect the vital lifeline of the region. Their plea is for stringent measures against industrial discharges, improved waste management, and collaborative efforts to safeguard the cultural and environmental heritage associated with the Indrayani River.
