Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Pollution Crackdown: 160 Violators Fined Rs 30 Lakh

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has cracked down on 160 establishments in Pimpri Chinchwad for violating air pollution control guidelines, collecting a hefty Rs 30 lakh in fines within just three days.

In a proactive move to address the escalating issue of air pollution, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated stringent actions against 160 establishments in Pimpri Chinchwad for flouting air pollution control guidelines. In a remarkable feat, the municipality has collected over Rs 30 lakh in fines within a mere three days.

Sanjay Kulkarni, Joint City Engineer (Environment) at PCMC, highlighted the urgent need for such measures, stating, “Construction works, haphazard debris disposal, and other violations contribute to air pollution and poor air quality. The PCMC is committed to monitoring and taking swift action against establishments that neglect norms and by-laws related to air pollution control. This crackdown, resulting in fines for 160 violators, is part of an ongoing effort to combat air pollution.”

Kulkarni further emphasized that this enforcement is not a one-time occurrence but will be sustained to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and promote a healthier living environment.

PCMC’s ‘Swachh Diwali-Shubh Diwali’ Campaign

To raise awareness about pollution and encourage environmentally conscious practices, PCMC has launched the ‘Swachh Diwali-Shubh Diwali’ campaign under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which runs until 15th November. As part of this initiative, citizens are urged to celebrate Diwali responsibly by avoiding pollution, using eco-friendly local products, and creating sustainable items from waste, such as flower rangolis.

Additionally, a social media challenge has been introduced, where participants can post a 30-second video or reel promoting a clean and green Diwali, using the hashtag #SwachhDiwali and tagging the PCMC’s official handles on Twitter and Instagram. The campaign offers participants a chance to win 30 prizes worth Rs 22,000.

Air Pollution Control Teams on the Ground

To reinforce their commitment to tackling air pollution, the PCMC has deployed 16 air pollution control teams across the 32 wards in Pimpri-Chinchwad city. These teams are conducting thorough inspections, issuing notices under the Environment Protection Act 1986 and the Gas (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981 for any violations of pollution prevention guidelines.

As the PCMC continues its vigilant efforts to curb air pollution, these actions serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility needed to ensure cleaner air for all residents.
