PCMC’s Subway Initiative to Alleviate Traffic Bottlenecks at Rakshak Chowk

In a proactive move aimed at tackling traffic congestion along the bustling Aundh-Ravet Road, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has announced plans to construct a new subway at Rakshak Chowk. This strategic initiative aims to streamline traffic flow, reduce travel time, and improve overall commuting convenience for residents and commuters traversing the area, officials revealed on Friday.

The 14-kilometre Aundh-Ravet Road serves as a crucial link between Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, witnessing heavy traffic volumes from both directions. With thousands of commuters relying on this route daily to access the Hinjewadi IT Park, Rakshak Chowk stands out as a significant signalised junction where commuters often experience delays of approximately 90 seconds per cycle, according to officials.

PCMC Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh highlighted the pressing need to address the mounting traffic congestion at Rakshak Chowk, particularly with the increasing volume of commuters utilizing the nearby Mula Bridge near Jupiter. The proposed subway project emerges as a strategic solution to alleviate gridlock and enhance mobility in the area.

Shrikant Sawane, Chief Engineer at PCMC, underscored the project’s comprehensive approach, which prioritizes the seamless integration of pedestrian infrastructure and public transit accessibility. Sawane emphasized the inclusion of dedicated pedestrian crossings and safe access points to Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) stops, ensuring equitable mobility for all members of the community.

Officials have assured that the construction of the subway will be carried out in consultation with local stakeholders and residents to address concerns and incorporate feedback into the design and implementation process. Importantly, the subway project at Rakshak Chowk will be executed without disrupting the recently implemented Aundh-Ravet Urban Streetscaping project, ensuring continuity in urban development efforts.

Santosh More, a resident of Wakad, welcomed the PCMC’s initiative, expressing hope that the subway construction would alleviate the growing traffic congestion in the area. However, More emphasized the importance of timely completion and urged the civic body to minimize disruptions for commuters and residents during the construction phase.
