PCMC Unveils Effluent Treatment Plant at Kudalwadi to Combat Indrayani River Pollution

In a notable stride towards environmental conservation, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has launched an advanced Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at Kudalwadi. With a capacity to treat 3 million liters per day, the facility is designed to effectively treat wastewater, curbing the discharge of chemical and contaminated water into the Indrayani River.

Shekhar Singh, the Commissioner of PCMC, expressed the municipality’s commitment to preserving the Indrayani River and highlighted sustainable measures like effluent treatment plants. Sanjay Kulkarni, Joint City Engineer (Environment) at PCMC, emphasized the significance of the plant as a pivotal step in addressing river pollution, showcasing the municipality’s proactive approach to environmental conservation.

Concerns raised by the National River Conservation Directorate regarding pollution levels in the Indrayani River led to the identification of major pollution sources in areas like Chikhli, Kudalwadi, and Jadhavwadi. The discharge of chemical water, oil, and grease from industrial units and unauthorized businesses prompted the establishment of the effluent treatment plant at Kudalwadi, following the clearing of encroachments along the drain.

In compliance with directives from the National Green Tribunal and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, the PCMC is actively addressing environmental concerns associated with river pollution.

To further promote sustainability, the PCMC is providing treated water free of charge to businesses, residents, and construction professionals through the effluent treatment plant. The municipality ensures swift filling of tankers with treated water, encouraging reduced reliance on the Indrayani River for non-drinking purposes.

The initiatives undertaken by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation reflect a proactive and dedicated approach to environmental stewardship, underscoring their commitment to safeguarding the Indrayani River for future generations.
