The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has undertaken discussions and planning to implement solutions aimed at maintaining the functionality of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in housing societies within the Pimpri Chinchwad region.
Complaints received by the PCMC Commissioner highlighted concerns about non-operational STPs in housing complexes and societies under Pimpri Chinchwad’s jurisdiction. A survey conducted in June 2021, as directed by the PCMC Commissioner, revealed that 47 out of 145 societies had non-functional STPs.
Meetings were subsequently organized with the Presidents/Secretaries of housing complexes/societies to identify and address the issues faced by these societies in operating their STPs. Common challenges reported included excessive electricity bills, lack of knowledge about agencies for STP maintenance and repairs, among others.
Recognizing the need for regular inspection and technical support, it was suggested to gather information on private agencies responsible for annual maintenance and repair of STPs. Due to the PCMC’s limited manpower, consulting agencies were appointed for a year, starting from 2023-24, to monitor and provide technical support for the permanent functioning of STPs in private societies.
Out of 337 societies under the PCMC jurisdiction, 296 have been identified with operational STPs. The approach adopted by the PCMC for monitoring and ensuring the functionality of STPs is being considered by other Municipal Corporations in Maharashtra, including Pune and Nashik.
To continue the efficient operation of sewage treatment plants in Pimpri Chinchwad societies, technical assistance and the regular appointment of consulting agencies for inspection are deemed necessary. Pricing analysis is underway based on rates provided by experienced private consultants, and decisions for the upcoming year will be made accordingly.
